Shopping Trip

Posted in Random Thoughts tagged , at 7:02 pm by momnibus

I went to the mall with my sister last night to look for some new summer clothes.  We looked high and low, had a milkshake looked some more.  Here’s what I found on my shopping trip for ME.

  1. Thomas the Tank Engine Indoor Tent
  2. Set of 5 Tonka Cars
  3. Two Potty Training Children’s Books
  4. Lightening McQueen Bouncy Ball
  5. 2 Pairs of shorts Size 18-24 Months
  6. Michael Crichton Book – Hardcover- Next ($7.99!!!)

Do you see a theme here?  I found nothing that I found remotely appealing in any of the stores I normally go to.  I’m going shopping again with Kate tonight and I’m hoping I can find SOMETHING.

Lola is currently bashing around upstairs playing with the new tent, good thing I trimmed her nails so she doesn’t shred the damn thing.

Shut Up and Shimmy

Posted in Bellydance tagged , at 5:44 pm by momnibus

Those were the words emblazoned on my belly dance instructors chest…and so we did.  We had a pretty small class, 9 of us I think?  I love the small class because I can see Joharah easier, on the other hand she can also see me easier…which has the tendency of throwing me off.

We practiced a few different turns which made me very dizzy, so then we practiced turning and spotting…fun times.  We’re also learning to combine top and bottoms…we were doing chest lifts and just moving our weight from right to left…sounds easy?  Try it.  The hour went by quickly as always and I was sweaty and sore by the time we were done.  We were also introduced to shaabi music, very fun stuff and hopefully I can get my hands on some.

It’s A Crichton Kind of Week

Posted in Random Thoughts tagged , , , , at 7:49 pm by momnibus

At our last family get together my aunt threw a book at me…okay…tossed…semantics.  A novel by Michael Crichton called State of Fear.  I believe she mentioned it would blow my mind or freak me out…something like that anyway.  I finally had the chance Saturday night to read it.  I’m one of those people who starts reading a book and I have this insane need to finish it without having to put it down, so technically I finished it on Sunday morning (4am).  It’s basic premise is the argument against global warming.  And really, it didn’t freak me out or anything.  When I make “green” choices for my family global warming isn’t the reason for the choice, it’s much more selfish than that.  There is some great information in there, a great book to pick up.  Well paced and I’m sure well researched.

Then later in the week I met another Crichton creation.  A made for TV movie on A&E that was based on another of his novels, The Andromeda Strain.  There was an attempt at some marketing via a fake blog, a very, very fake blog complete with audio.  However fake it was I went, I made the link to the movie and I made a point of watching the movie.   Score one for marketing.

The movie itself was very enjoyable.  They don’t wait long before hitting you full on with the action.  I liked the group of actors (Rick Schroder cute as always) they all seemed to fit together nicely.  If you have a chance to see it in repeats I would go for it.  Short version with no spoilers…big bad virus out to get the human race.  Guess what happens?  Go on, guess.  Now I need to get that stupid book to see how much better the book is.

I Hate You…Yes YOU

Sturnus vulgaris, also known as European Starlings.  The black scourge of the sky has descended into my yard…okay I may be exaggerating a little but there were six of them out there at one point.  We decided to put out the bird feeder in hopes that we could draw some birds that may or may not want to eat yellow jackets(the ones that have tried building a hive or nest or WHATEVER in between our fence boards and on our deck) or at the very least make our yard less appealing.  I have no idea if that thought process is even remotely logical, but it seemed so at the time.

These birds are messy, loud, and a bunch of pigs.  Silence has just now settled on the backyard and I think they’ve finally finished cleaning up all of the crumbs left in the feeder.  Looks like we’ll be heading to the bird store to pick up some anti Starling food (arsenic??) and if that doesn’t work we’ll have to get a new feeder.

Mmmmmuffins

We had such a busy weekend.  Spring is definitely here and we’re soaking up the sunshine!

Friday we spent an uneventful night vegging out watching tv.  The plan was to make muffins but this great show came on called The Final 24, the episode we watched featured the final hours of River Phoenix.  I used to have such a crush on him…I think he was the only blonde featured on my wall of teen heart throbs.  Since that didn’t end until 10pm that’s when Scott and I tackled the muffins.

The recipe was easy, I got it from Michael Smith from Chef at Home.  The recipe is Spiced Banana Muffins, but we felt the need to add chocolate chips…can’t have banana muffins without chocolate!  The smell of these muffins in the oven was heavenly!  And we think they turned out quite nicely and I am suitably impressed with myself.

Saturday and Sunday afternoon were spent tidying the yard and finishing up our very first garden building project.  We had cut all the pieces and Saturday we put it all together and cleared the grass.  I think the worst job was getting the posts in the ground.  Scott spent a lot of time with a VERY BIG screwdriver trying to loosen the dirt.  The problem is that beneath our “grass” there is no soil, just solid clay which makes any gardening project extremely difficult and frustrating.  Sunday was spent banging the posts the rest of the way in.  So next weekend we’re going to shoring up the sides for some stability and installing the plastic liner.  I’m hoping it will be done soon, I’m really looking forward to having an herb garden.  We’re not sure what else we’re going to plant, but it should be fun figuring out what else we want for our kitchen garden!  I’ll post more on that container when we’ve finished it!

Have a great day!

Molars…Great

Posted in The Boy tagged , , , at 9:08 pm by momnibus

Oh the crankiness.  MC is apparently acquiring more teeth.  I was really hoping for a little break here.  After the soaking shirt, random tantrums, and constant gnawing he decides he won’t eat.  Lunch times are becoming royally frustrating as I can’t find anything that he wants to eat.  What ever he thought was good yesterday he has decided today is pure poison.

I can only assume he’s getting molars, that’s all that is left to come in.  If he follows his past teething routines he will be popping two of those suckers at the same time.  I guess that’s good in a way…getting through it twice as fast.  I can’t help but wonder if he only got one tooth at a time if it would affect him as much.

So he’s tired, cranky and obviously uncomfortable.  And I’m now tired, cranky and frustrated.  Makes for some fun play time.  All of this is leaving me pretty uninspired.

Furminated

Posted in Cleaning, Dogs, cats tagged , , , , at 5:41 pm by momnibus

Well after seeing this post over at dooce I decided to look a little further into the Furminator phenomenon.  I found some other people who were equally pleased with the expensive little thing.  So, since I read it on the internet, it must be true…and it was purchased for the $60 (gulp).  After spending that much money on one brush the results of this thing had better have been damned impressive…and they were.

Scott bought the medium sized brush so that we would be able to brush the dogs and cats without having to buy the small cat brush at a similar hefty cost.  We waited for the boy to go for his nap and then we let the fur fly!  My, my, my how it flew.  We first did the two worst offenders, Flash and Zoe before giving Merlin a quick brushing thinking that he wouldn’t have too much fur to brush out…we were mistaken.  After taking off the equivalent of a couple of small dogs in fur I had to force myself to wait for the boy to wake up from his nap before tackling the seven cats.  I brushed at least a gallon bucket full of cat hair from them as well.  Lola seemed to enjoy it the most, which I thought was odd since she normally HATES being brushed but there she was rolling around on the floor in ecstasy while a furminated her.

The real test of course was the vacuum test.  We wanted to see how much or little hair would accumulate after using the thing and so we started with freshly vacuumed carpets.  The results have been fabulous!!  The once populous fur tumbleweeds have been eradicated.

We have won.

Fur…terminated.

Oops

Sorry for the break there!  I can’t believe it’s been a week since I wrote here.  In my defense we did have a long weekend last weekend and we got busy doing some much needed home projects.

The garage got tidied a bit.  We’ve got 9 bags of actual garbage ready to go, as well as two boxes of stuff for the reuse centre.  We also cut our lumber to make a cedar planter box.  However we ran out of time since we actually expected the weather forecast to be correct (an obvious error on our part) so it’s in the garage waiting to be put together and put in the yard so that we can start planting.  Right now we’re thinking some herbs and maybe a few veggies.

I think MC is getting more teeth.  He is cranky and spent most of this morning alternating between hitting me, the dogs, and the walls.  Fun times.  I’m guessing these are the back molars since he’s got all the rest already.  His shirt is soaked from drooling so much and he’s constantly chewing on whatever toy he happens to be playing with.  The best though is the complete refusal of food…not even juice.  I’m not sure how long this is going to last but if he follows his past routines we’re looking at a couple of weeks and since he usually gets two teeth at once this should suck, royally.

Waiting and waiting for the weather to be nice so we can go hang outside again…It’s been cold and wet for a few days now.  I guess that’s spring though.

I Tried Blocking It Out

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:35 pm by momnibus

I was trying desperately to forget how AWFUL I slept Sunday/Monday night.  MC started whimpering at 12:30 while I was still surfing the net (aka watching Gordon Ramsay on YouTube).  I was about to hang it up for the night when we heard the first little sobs.  And then we started listening…and waiting with bated breath to see if he was just dreaming or if he was actually awake.

We both stared in the dark and watched the little lights on the monitor go up and down.  Finally I decided he wasn’t going back to sleep and trudged over to his room.  He was definitely upset about something so I held him for a bit as he did that breathing/sobbing/hiccup thing.  Eventually I couldn’t stand anymore so we moved back to my bed.  And we laid there…for an hour…I was going to let him sleep in our bed but that child would NOT go back to sleep.  He kept smacking Scott in the head and if I moved he rolled over and had to poke my face.

Scott finally gave up and put him back in his own bed.

We had a zombierific day.

Hangin Tough

Remember the New Kids on the Block?  I was a die hard fan in the 90’s, I went with my friend Christine and joined the hordes of young pubescent girls.  We screamed ourselves hoarse, and made wedding plans.  I may have even practiced writing my “married” name LOL.

Well after 20 years they’ve decided to have a reunion, with a concert tour.  And guess who’s going??

ME!  With Christine!  We’re hopping on the first time warp and heading to the big smoke.  I’m strangely excited.  We’re going to be off to the side of the stage 23rd row.

Now excuse me, I have to go dig out my NKOTB CDs d try to see if I can still remember the songs!
